Chapter 7

Zelaria

Danielle sat down on a fold out chair in the cellar room. Her hands were wrapped gratefully around a hot chocolate. Brianne had closed the café upstairs and came back down into the cellar, taking a seat at the table at which Danielle sat.

“So, I tell you everything,” she said resolutely. “Forty years, I’m in Astoria, Danielle. Yet never I tell this to a soul. You may not believe, but you must believe, for soon it will be too late to believe.”

Danielle smiled at her, trying wordlessly to communicate her willingness to believe.

“When you see what you saw on the beach,” Brianne continued, “when I come find you. I know. I know here is someone who might believe. So, here we are.” Brianne almost seemed to be putting off what she had to say, as if she were somehow afraid of it herself. “My name not Brianne. I change from Phaebry to name more like your kind. Where I come from, Phaebry mean like your princess. I was princess.”

There was a pause and Danielle found herself filling it, more as an encouragement for Brianne to go on than anything else. “Where are you from? Not to be rude, but I can never place your accent.”

Brianne smiled at Danielle’s awkward honesty. “That because no other accent like mine. Not until very recently,” she said, shaking her head. “I am from Zelaria. This my planet.” Brianne let it sink in for a moment.

Danielle took a breath and tried to fight the instinct to bolt for the door. “Okay...okay, I’m with you. How far away is...” she struggled to get the pronunciation, “Ze-lari-a?”

Brianne gave a wry smile. “Closer every minute, Danielle.”

Danielle played her part with a puzzled look.

“My planet in other universe,” Brianne said, pointing over their heads, “parallel universe. My universe on collision with this one. My planet occupy same space as Earth in my universe. And, when universes collide, my planet will be destroyed along with whole universe, while this universe will barely notice.”

Danielle just looked back rather blankly at Brianne. It was not that she did not believe her. She could not honestly have said either way, but it was just all a bit too much to take in. It seemed that Brianne could see her struggle.

“I know,” she said, patting the table as if it were Danielle’s hand. “It is a lot. That why have something to help you.”

Brianne reached into a drawer and took out a small orb that looked a little like an over-sized metallic marble. It seemed almost to shine with its own faintly turquoise glow. It also reminded her of the objects Phaedra brought her from the beach.

“Not to be afraid, Danielle. This help you see what I have seen. You see my life and you understand.”

****

The first thing she noticed was the light. There was a lot less of it and it had a bluish tint to it. The quality of light wasn’t fundamentally altered, it was just something subtle like a film filter placed over her field of vision.
